Tithe Barn Times – 19th November 2018

Learning Opportunities

Once again, this term seems to be flying by and there are lots of exciting activities taking place in school.

From the Stone Age to the Space Race our new topics are encouraging our children to be inquisitive learners who are curious about the world around them.   We are continuing to showcase all the different aspects of learning taking place in school via our E-schools platform and our YouTube channel Tithe Barn TV.

Welcome Back

Welcome back to a very busy half term as we begin the countdown to Christmas! Please find attached a document providing further details on all the different events which will be occurring in school this half term. We hope you find it useful.

I hope you all had a lovely half term. Many of our children spent time during the holidays with Mr Stamper on our Forest Schools Days. Listening to the feedback from children and parents they have been fantastic days and I would like to thank Mr Stamper for giving up his time in the school holidays. If your child is interested in attending we hope to offer similar days in the future.

I look forward to another great half term, with lots of wonderful learning in school.

AVIVA

We are beginning to develop our outside space further and think about how we can enrich the wonderful grounds that the children have access to. In the spring term we will be consulting with parents and children about how they would like the grounds to be developed.

As part of this development we are hoping to have a musical trail in the playground. As our school budget is very limited and funding to schools continues to be reduced we are seeking funding from AVIVA.

WE NEED YOUR HELP! Please use the link below to vote for our school and help us to meet our target of 4000 votes as this should enable us to reach the final. Every vote counts! Please support our school and encourage others to do so.

PLEASE VOTE NOW

Thank you to everyone who boarded the Book Bus when it visited school recently. Your purchases raised £193.15 in free books for our new library.

Parking

I would like to politely remind parents to ensure that they show due consideration to our neighbours when parking their cars. Please do not block drives of local residents and ensure that you park in a safe place and not on the pavement.

Can I also remind parents that the school car park is to be only used for parents and children who have a disabled badge.

E-Schools

As part of our approach to streamlining communication and enabling parents to have access to as much information as possible we use an online platform called E-Schools.

Parents are able to make payments to school, access letters that have been sent home from school, keep updated on what is going on in school through the class pages and also access the instructions for their child’s weekly homework. The use of this platform reduces the amount of paper that is used in school and enables parents to access information easily. We ask all that all parents regularly check E-schools and if you having difficulties accessing it please let the office know.

Pupil Voice
As practically every single decision we take in school will ultimately affect one group of people (the children), we believe that it’s vital that they have a voice in the decision making and that their voice is heard. Tithe Barn’s school council aims to be one way of doing this. Classes from Y2 to Y6 hold annual elections to vote for a girl and boy who will best represent their class.
Any child who is interested in standing for the position of school councilor is asked to think carefully about how they can effectively represent their class and how they can contribute to developing their school. The children will be asked to share their ideas with their classmates prior to the confidential elections taking place next week. I will let you know the outcomes of the elections in the next newsletter.

Jeans for Genes Day
Friday 21st September is Jeans for Genes Day and this year we will be having a sponsored penalty shoot out to raise money for the charity and school fund. Further details will be sent out shortly. If you would like to find out more about the charity, please visit www.jeansforgenes.org.

Medical Needs
It is very important that you let us know if your child has a particular medical need such as asthma or allergies. If your child needs to take medicine whilst in school, please speak to our office staff. You will need to complete a form to enable us to administer medication which must be given to school in a clearly labelled pharmacist’s packet or container with your child’ name, dosage and date printed on it.

New Eco- Warrior Newletter

As spring is now finally with us, we are really excited to have a newly appointed, and extremely keen group of Eco- Warriors. Led by Mrs Patton and Mr Stamper this group of fourteen children of all ages, will be working through the year to make a Tithe Barn a more environmen- tally friendly place.
Already the children have been busily planting hedgerows along some of the perimeter fences. These plants were kindly donated by the Wood- land Trust and funded by Ikea. We are hoping that once these have grown they will provide a habitat and food source for wild- life, as well as looking good.
In a previously neglect- ed corner of the school grounds we have also planted a willow bed containing 200 cuttings. We hope that as well as providing a wall of greenness, these fast growing plants will pro- vide us with a future harvest of willow stems for crafting and creating living structures.

Our projects through the Year..
funds for the school by recycling the following items:-
Empty printer cartridges.
Old mobile telephones
Batteries
Pens
Empty correction fluid containers

Please bring any of these you may have lying around into school. As well as being able to en- sure they are properly recycled we will receive money for some of the items. We will be sending out further information about these and also the Bags4Schools collection soon.

Gardening
The Eco-Warriors will be taking a lead in getting the school vegetable gardens and Luca’s Gar- den, back into full use as an amazing educational resource. We desperate- ly need donations of well rotted manure and pot- ting compost. If anyone can help with this please contact Mr Stamper.
Big Pedal
The school have entered the Sustrans Big Pedal 2018. Running between 23/4/18 and 4/5/18 theBig Pedal is the UK’s largest inter-school cy- cling and scooting chal- lenge it inspires pupils, staff and parents to choose two wheels for their school journey. The Eco-Warriors have been
busy collating the data on this and we hope that we may be in the running for prizes, as well as having happier and healthier journeys to school. See www.bigpedal.org.uk
RSPB
We are extremely pleased to have secured a whole day visit from the RSPB. They will be work- ing with groups of chil- dren to carry out a habi- tat survey and will then help us put together a plan to improve the bio- diversity of our site.
