Dear Parents and Carers
At school, we can hardly believe that the final half term of the year is upon us as the year has passed by so quickly. It has been incredible to see the children developing so quickly and growing in confidence, particularly our wonderful Reception children in Antarctica class who have changed so much since September.
I thought it would be helpful to remind you that the children will be returning to school on Tuesday 9th June as Monday 8th June is a First-Aid training day for all staff.
I hope that your children have a very well-deserved Whitsuntide holiday over the next two weeks and we look forward to seeing them on Tuesday 9th June.
Mr MJ Shaw
Fundraising for Nepal
We have now revised upwards the amount of money that was raised by the school community for the disaster relief fund in Nepal. In total, an incredible £380.34 was raised which is an exceptional effort for the six of our school. The money has now been sent off to the government’s Disaster Emergency Committee.
Year 2 Swashbuckle
On Wednesday, our Year 2 children went to Media City to take part in the BBC Swashbuckle programme. They were extremely excited to be dressed up as pirates and taking part in the show and they had a fabulous time. Gem, Line, Cook and Captain Sinker thought that they were amazing and have declared them to be the cheeriest cheerers ever to set foot aboard the Scarlet Squid. We will let you know in due course when the show will be aired on CBeebies.
Year 1 Hatworks
Year 1 went off to the Hatworks Museum this week in the pouring rain and returned in yes…the rain! However, they had a superb time learning all about hatmaking as part of their topic. Violet commented that the visit was ‘fabulous’ and Caleb stated that it was ‘spectacular!’
Year 3 visit to Chester Zoo
Last week, Year 3 (Africa) went to visit Chester Zoo as part of their summer term topic to look at different African animals. The children enjoyed the visit immensely and were inspired to create incredible African Animal fact-files in class which they share with each other. Who would have thought that two children would have chosen to write about the incredible okapi – relative of the giraffe?
End of Year Awards
If you have any children who were in Year 6 last year and received one of our annual awards, please could you return it as soon as possible so that we can use them in our Leavers’ Asssembly.
At the end of each week, we announce which of our houses has won the leaf point competition – Jacaranda, Oak, Willow or Palm. The children really enjoy this and the house captains record the positions on our Leaf Point spirals which reside in our Globe Zone. Mr Roberts who originally made the spirals some years ago, has recently revamped them beautifully with wooden plinths. These will now last for many more years, so we would like to thank Mr Roberts for his hard work yet again.
Reception Mud Kitchen
Mrs Patton and her class would like to say a great big thank you to all the parents who have donated equipment for the Reception Mud Kitchen and to the parents and staff who have helped to create it. A particularly special mention goes to Mr Tonge who has helped so much in its creation. The Reception outdoor classroom is looking great with all the equipment, plants, beds, gazebo and mud kitchen.
Sports Day will be held on Wednesday 17th June (the second week back after half term). Information about the day will go out shortly after the holiday but this year, there will be refreshments available for parents by Stay and Play. The proceeds will be in aid of our Lucas Garden by the side of our Year 6 classroom.
Lucas Garrity Smile Award
Each week in assembly, we give out a Star trophy to reward a child in school who has demonstrated a really positive attitude in their work and around school. If you visit the school entrance, you will notice that we now have a Lucas Garrity Smile Award board which has been donated by the Rotary Club of Stockport Lamplighter. This board was presented to the school by the Rotary Club and was gratefully received by Mr Shaw and Mrs Garrity. Each year, we will record the names of one boy and one girl in Year 2 who have demonstrated an exceptionally positive attitude and smiley demeanour, just like the shining example that Lucas set for us.
Friends of Tithe Barn
On Thursday 11th and Friday 12th June, FOTB will be selling Father’s Day gifts after school. There will also be a clothes collection (bags going out today) on the Friday and a Kids Cinema Night.
Dinner Money – next half term
The cost of dinner money for next half term will be £73.80 for Years 3, 4 and 5 and £63.55 for Year 6.
Playing Before and After School
Please could we remind everyone that the children may not play on any school playground equipment on the school grounds before or after school. Play equipment is not intended for use outside of the school day as it requires staff supervision.
Four children in Year 4 had the opportunity to take part in a tennis competition this week at West Heaton’s Tennis Club. Well done to Gustav, Eve, Harry and Lauren who played really well and came second overall out of the three teams represented. Keep up the great work!

This document produced by the Health Protection Agency, Â gives guidance on the most common infectious diseases and the recommended periods for which children should be kept away from school (or nursery). Tithe Barn school adheres to these recommendations and as such parents and guardians must also follow these recommendations, in particular the exclusion periods following illness, sickness or diarrhoea – which is 48 hours from the LAST bout of illness.
