Features of Instructional Writing

Posted in News by lstapleton on 27th November, 2007

Important things to remember when writing instructions:Â

  • Make sure to use imperatives (bossy verbs) when telling someone what to do       e.g. cut, roll, paste, slice
  • Instructions must be written in order/sequence so that people will know what they have to do
  • Use steps, numbers or bullet points at the start of each sentence to show this order e.g. step 1, step 2, step 3 / a , b, c / 1, 2.3 or bullet points (*)
  • Always go on to a new line when telling someone the next thing they have to do
  • Join the steps/order of events together by using time connectives e.g. firstly, secondly, next, then, finally, after, finally
  • When you are telling somebody how to do something, make sure you explain to them why!

Why not try this activity from the BBC website or click on the two examples of websites with instructional writing below! Go on, it will be fun!!

New Eco-code

Posted in News by Y4Teacher on 27th November, 2007

One of the first tasks for the new Eco-Warriors this year, has been to come up with a new Eco-code for the school. They did a whole school assembly at the beginning of term to let the children know of their plan and to ask for their thoughts and ideas on how we could update and improve our exisiting one. The Eco-warriors and Mrs Patton then came up with six new codes which, after much deliberation, they mananged to whittle down to two. The whole school then voted on the one they felt most reflected the schools commitment to improving its environmental performance. This is the Eco-code the children have chosen.

23-11-07 Homework, finally online!

Posted in Year 3 by pjones on 26th November, 2007

Many apologies for the lack of slides on the year 3 site for the Homework task, but unfortunately the schools power was cut off at 3 and we couldn’t access the server until today. I’m sure you’ll have seen what you needed to on the handouts printed out and will have done a fantastic job on them.

Can you see what you might need to include in yours to make it even better?

Remember we’ll be doing some artwork on Monday afternoon so get your thinking caps on for what exactly you’re going to paint! See you on Monday morning, bright and early and ready to work hard!
