The 4 “ing” rules

Posted in Spelling with Julie, Year 5 by Year5Children on 25th November, 2008

By Babette, Max, Eleanor and Julie

The two easiest rules, when you can Just add “ing” to the end of the word are

1) When there are two vowels before the last letter (Consonant)

Like Sleep = sleeping, Dream = dreaming

2) When theres a short vowel sound with two consonants at the end of the word.

Like Fish = Fishing, Climb = Climbing

The third rule is

3) If there is an ‘e’ at the end of the word we must drop the ‘e‘ before adding ing

e.g. Hope = Hoping, Smile = Smiling

The fourth rule is

4) If there is a short vowel sound followed by a consonant as the the last letter then we must double the last letter (consonant) before we can add ing.

e.g Hop = Hopping, Swim = Swimming

So really we know that we can always just add ING except when there is an E at the end of the word OR when there is a short vowel sound and 1 consonant at the end of the word.

Today we have been learning about fruit here are a few examples.

apple-la manzanas-las manzanas(ploral)

pear-la pera-las peras(ploral)

if the end ends in a that means the ploral would be just adding a s on both words but if it does not end with a e.g

el limon

then you change it to this e.g

los limon
