Work samples – rotation

Posted in News, Numeracy, Year 5 by pjones on 28th April, 2010

The children have been working on giving others challenging shapes to rotate 90 degrees at a time from a fixed point. They started confusing rotation and reflection to start with but are now getting there.

Could you do some of their challenges? I’ll put a few on here later to test you!

New seating & learning area

Posted in News, Reception, Year 1, Year 2, Year 3, Year 4, Year 5, Year 6 by pjones on 27th April, 2010

There was an exciting development in school today as the people from the log store came in to fit the log seats for the children to sit in and the large reading chair in the woodland area outside the Year 3 & 4 classrooms.

We were treated to a fantastic demonstration of the log cutters creating a bench out of a log and then had the opportunity to ask them questions.

We can’t wait to use the area when it’s finished, how do you feel about it?

Rotation – from a Vertex – 90 & 180 degrees

Posted in ActivExpression/Activote, Numeracy, Year 5 by pjones on 26th April, 2010

After doing the lesson the children used their ActivExpressions to respond to 10 questions, below are the responses on the graphs to 3 of them. – They’ve done really well and shown some fantastic understanding!

Look at the video below that shows a child working out rotation on a shape by 90 degrees. What have you learnt from watching the video? Can you see where she developed her understanding?

Please leave a comment on what you think of what we’re doing, or about what you’ve understood/found difficult. :)

Shopping in Reception class

Posted in News, Reception by Miss Stonier on 25th April, 2010

The children have had the opportunity to go shopping using real money this week!

Firstly the children went on a treasure hunt around the playground to find the “silver” coins that they have been learning about with Mrs Maher. This was great fun and the children really enjoyed the hunt.

We then grouped the shopping items into fruits and vegetables and the children were each given five pennies of their very own to go shopping with. They had to tell the shop assistant what they wanted to buy and then they had to exchange money for goods.

The children did really well, using their counting skills, to work out how many pennies they had to give to the shop keeper and how much change they had left at the end.

The children may want to do the shopping for all you Mums and Dads over the weekend and show you how great they are at spending money:-)

We hope you all had a great Easter and enjoyed the holidays, we got to cook for some of our friends here as we missed our big family meal at home! It was lots of fun especially as we also decorated some eggs, we haven’t done that in a long time! :)

We can’t believe how quickly the time has gone, we only have 2 weeks left till we get back home so we are fitting in as many fun activities as we can before we leave…most of them include baking or eating!! :p We had another bake sale tonight and made giant cupcakes, we will put the pictures up so you can see! :)
