Tithe Barn Times 8th September 2017

Welcome Back
Welcome back and a special welcome to all our new children and families who are just starting their journey at Tithe Barn.
School Calendar
We are currently putting together a school calendar that will provide an outline of events for this academic year. We are also looking for a company to sponsor the calendar. If you know of anyone who would be interested in doing this please email me at headteacher@tithebarn.stockport.sch.uk. We hope you will find this useful and will be distributing it to every child as soon as it is finalised.
Last term, the children currently in Year 2 went to watch an episode of Swashbuckle being filmed. They had a fantastic day dressed as pirates.
The episode featuring these children will be shown Saturday 23rd September at 10.35 am on CBeebies. I do hope you will tune in and spot some familiar faces.
Following on for our successful bid for new computers from Aviva last year, we have decided to put another bid in to support the development of a school library. To assist us in this process we are again looking for a financial adviser to submit our application. If you know of anyone who would be able to support us with this please contact me.
I have recently been informed by Dolce as to a change in their policy. Any school lunch that has been ordered and is not cancelled before 9.30 am will be charged for. This is part of their new policy to reduce food waste. We would appreciate your assistance with this matter.
Key Dates
September 22nd – Jeans for Genes day.
September 23rd – Family Festival 4-7pm
October 6th 9am – FOTB Annual General Meeting
October 10th – Flower Festival
October 11th – Whole School Harvest Festival 9 am – parents welcome
Pupil Voice
As practically every single decision we take in school will ultimately affect one group of people (the children), we believe that it’s vital that they have a voice in the decision making and that their voice is heard. Tithe Barn’s school council aims to be one way of doing this. Classes from Y2 to Y6 hold annual elections to vote for a girl and boy who will best represent their class.
Any child who is interested in standing for the position of school councilor is asked to think carefully about how they can effectively represent their class and how they can contribute to developing their school. The children will be asked to share their ideas with their classmates prior to the confidential elections taking place next week. I will let you know the outcomes of the elections in the next newsletter.
Family Festival
On Saturday 23rd September 4pm-7pm Tithe Barn’s annual Family Festival will be taking place. The aim is to celebrating our lovely school community and welcoming all the new children and parents. So, we have decided to slash ticket prices in the hope that more families than ever will join us for this fun- filled afternoon.
Buy your ticket before 15th September at the early bird price of only £2 for adults and £1.50 for kids! Included in this price is a super line up of young musical talent, the return of Mr. Muddleton with his fabulous magic show for the littlies, lots of craft activities, forest play and marshmallow toasting, yoga, dressing up and bubble fun. If you’ve never been, now is the time!
Jeans for Genes Day
Friday 22nd September is Jeans for Genes Day and we are inviting your children to come into school wearing jeans. We would be grateful for a donation of £1 to support this worthwhile charity. If you would like to find out more about the charity, please visit www.jeansforgenes.org.
Medical Needs
It is very important that you let us know if your child has a particular medical need such as asthma or allergies. If your child needs to take medicine whilst in school, please speak to our office staff. You will need to complete a form to enable us to administer medication which must be given to school in a clearly labelled pharmacist’s packet or container with your child’ name, dosage and date printed on it.
School Vision and Rewards
We are currently embarking on an exciting journey where we are revisiting our vision and values for the school. On Tuesday governors and all members of staff spent the day discussing their ideas and means of translating ideas into practice. Our next steps will be to consult with the children, parents and local community and you will receive further information on this shortly.
As part of our discussions we have considered ways to encourage our children to be independent learners to develop resilience and a growth mindset. To encourage the children with this and ensure they become self- motivated learners we have decided to trial the removal of leaf points. Currently the school organises the children into four groups across the school and the children are awarded points for learning and good behavior.
However current research and staff feedback has identified rewards as having a negative impact on the skills we wish to develop in our children. We have therefore decided to trial a new approach where we no longer award points but use the groups (trees) during theme days for collaborative learning.
We will be inviting you to a meeting to share our new approach and our work on growth mindset later this term.
Thank you for taking the time to read the newsletter. The newsletter will be sent out every fortnight and I hope to give you a snap shot of all the exciting things that are happening in school.
